The purpose of this article is to understand the lists of characteristics of good teachers by analysing the beliefs of the students, parents, other teachers at school. Students’ ideas are always important to us in assessing how any teacher is good in all aspect. If you as a teacher know the students’ viewpoint, then you can use this information in self-assessment and professional development. 

The researcher believed the professional knowledge, high level of ethics, honesty, confidence, consistency, fairness, self-command and optimism made the good teacher. 


After surveying among thousands of students, the researchers drew the result that the most respected teachers are joyful, patient, friendly, understanding, objective and fair in evaluating students’ performances.

Lists of characteristics describing a good teacher can be divided into two groups



> First group concentrates on the teacher’s personality characteristics and qualities. 

> Second group indicates the teachers’ abilities, skills and professional skill, abilities and capabilities etc.  


The students’, the parents’, the teachers’, the teacher students’ or the school principals’ opinion is different concerning what makes a good teacher. Moreover, students’ opinion varies and were influenced by their age, self-concept, motivation and social background. This implies that this issue is very complex.

  • A good teacher must develop the students’ personality in good terms and his or her student's school results are very good. 

  • A good teacher must be adaptive in teaching students with different needs or student who need special attention during studies.

  • A good teacher must be able to refresh his professional knowledge and skills from time to time.

  • A good teacher must be able to keep discipline among the students.

  • A good teacher must be punctual on his tutorings and should solve queries of a student successfully.

  • A good teacher should be on good terms with his colleagues and is always willing to take up extra duties with pleasure.

  • A good teacher should always focus on teaching well, wide-scale knowledge.

  • Setting a good example for the students remained very important.

  • A good teacher is always able to set a good example for student and find the balance between his or her communication and activating students in a particular situation by being restrictive.

  • A good teacher is always able to energize students to develop the students’ intellectual, moral, artistic attitudes and social responsibility by being flexible and lively.

  • All teachers’ roles and personality traits are changing depending on the socio-economical changes.

  • A good teacher is always energetic, enthusiastic, extrovert, optimistic, spontaneous and adaptive. 

  • An effective teacher makes students involved in active learning process via debates, discussions, research, writing essays, assessment, experiments, making models or products in the form of searching for information, giving information and practice.

  • A good teacher always sets high standards in the classroom and gives constant feedback on the students’ development, plans the learning environment consciously, makes parents involved in their children’s learning process and cooperates with his or her colleagues and the staff.

  • A good teacher needs to have some basic personal characteristics: unconditional acceptance, self-acceptance, empathy, full attention to the student, emotional sensitivity, and credibility as well. No matter how effective you are as a teacher, you can become a better teacher.

  • One of the key skills needed to be a good teacher is a dedication to continued education and a love of learning.

  • A willingness to share knowledge and experiences with a student is one of the most important qualities of a good teacher. 

  • Being able to engage students with humour, creative lessons and a strong classroom presence is an important part of what makes someone a good teacher.
