1. Aliah University (1780)

The "Aliah University" ( or AU) is one of the oldest modern-style educational institutes existed in India. The college was established in October 1780 by Warren Hastings who was appointed as a British Governor-general of East India Company. Earlier the college was known by name "Mohammedan College of Calcutta"The college was originally set up at Bow Bazaar, Kolkata in 1782 later moved to its campus on Wellesley Square in the 1820s.




2. Zakir Husain Delhi College, Delhi (1792)

The origin of the "Zakir Husain Delhi College" can be traced to the closing years of the 17th Century, with the establishment of a Madrasa by "Ghaziuddin Khan". It is known as the oldest existing educational institution in India. According to the historian the Mughal Empire was weakend during the 18th century which result in the closure of the Madrasa in the early 1790s. Finally an oriental college for literature, science and art, was established at the site in 1792 with the support of the wealthy citizens of Delhi. 



3. Presidency University, Kolkata (1817)

The "Presidency University" was originally established in 1817 and it was known as  "Hindu College" at that time. Later it was transformed into the "Presidency College of Bengal" in 1855The College was formally started on Monday, 20 January 1817 with 20 'scholars'.



4. CMS College, Kottayam (1817)

The "CMS College", Kottayam was established in 1817 by the Church Missionary Society of England. In 1857 the CMS college was affiliated to Madras University. Now it is one of the largest colleges in Kerala. 



5. Serampore College, Serampore  (1818)

The "Senate of Serampore College", Serampore was founded on July 15, 1818, under the establishing leadership of William Carey, Joshua Marshman, and William Ward, from the English Baptist Missionary.



6. Deccan College, Pune (1821)

The "Deccan College" was originally started on 06 October 1821. It was opened with the name "Hindoo College" at that time. It renamed as "Poona College" in the year of 1851 and later changed to its current name in October 1864. The College was closed down by the British Government in 1934 however it was reopened on 17th August 1939 and named as "Deccan College, Post-Graduate and Research Institute". 





7. Robertson College, Jabalpur (1836)

The "Robertson College", Jabalpur was established in 1836 and back then it set up as a "Sagar Govt. School". Later it was upgraded to "Sagar Collegiate School" in the year of 1860The institution was moved to Jabalpur in 1873 It is considered as one of the oldest institutions in Madhya Pradesh. Just after Independence of India, the college is renamed as "Mahakaushal Mahavidyalaya" and finally, it now is known as "Government Science College".




8. Presidency College, Chennai (1840)

The "Presidency College" was formally established on 16 October 1840 as a "Madras Preparatory School" and later, upgraded to a high school and then, graduate college. Presidency College is one of the oldest government arts colleges in India. 




9. Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (1847)

The "IIT-Roorkee College" was founded in 1847 AD as the First Engineering College under the British Colonial Empire. The College was then named as "The Thomason College of Civil Engineering" in 1854. The IIT-Roorkee Institute has an eminent history and a remarkable past. 


10. Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (1856)

"Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology" (or IIEST) is located at Shibpur, Howrah, West Bengal owes its origin to the erstwhile Bengal Engineering College. It was established as "Civil Engineering College" on 24th November 1856, in the premises of the Writers Building, Calcutta. Later the college was affiliated to this Calcutta University in May 1857. In March 2014, the institute has awarded the status of an INI and was renamed "Indian Institutes of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur"




11. The University of Mumbai (1857)

The "University of Mumbai" was founded in 1857 by Dr John Wilson and completed 163 years of its establishment. The University of Mumbai formerly known as the "University of Bombay" is a collegiate public state university located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The university is known as one of the prominent historical university in India.

The "University of Madras" (or Madras University) was established on 05 September 1857. The "University of Madras" is known as one of the oldest universities in India. 




13. The University of Calcutta (1857)

The "University of Calcutta" was established on 24 January 1857. It is also known as the oldest of the modern universities in India. Calcutta University has been an Alma Mater to many historical personalities.



14. Gujarat Arts & Science College (1860)

The "Gujarat Arts & Science College" had humble beginnings in the year 1860 with the help of  "Sir Theodore Cracraft Hope". Back then it was known as "Gujarat Provincial College" but it stopped working in 1872. Later in 1879, the college is restarted as "Gujarat College" which was managed by the Gujarat College Committee. 



15. Patna College (1863)

The "Patna College" was established in the year of 1863 during the British Reign and is one of the oldest colleges in Bihar for providing higher education in the state. It has left a deep impact on the life of the people in Bihar.




16. Ravenshaw College, Cuttack (1868)

Ravenshaw College (now Ravenshaw University) was established in 1868 by Thomas Edward Ravenshaw. The college is located in Cuttack. Ravenshaw College has been at the forefront of the research activities since its inception. 



17. Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (1875)

The "Aligarh Muslim University" (AMU) was established by Syed Ahmed Khan (The great Muslim reformer and statesman) as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875. The university starts functioning on 24 May 1875The college was formerly affiliated with the University of Calcutta and afterwards got affiliated with the University of Allahabad in 1885



18. St. Stephen's College, Delhi (1881)

The "St. Stephen's College" was founded on 01 February 1881. It was established by the joint effort of the "Cambridge Mission of Delhi" and "The society for the propagation of the Gospel".  


19. Panjab University, Chandigarh (1882)

The "University of Punjab" was founded on October 14, 1882, at Lahore. It was originally established on on October 14, 1882 in Lahore. It was relocated in Chandigarh in the year 1947 as the East Punjab University after the partition of India, where the university was split between Pakistan and India.




20. Bangalore University, Banglore (1886)

The "Bangalore University" was originally established as "Central College" in Bangalore during the British Raj in the year 1886. The university is also a part of AIU (The Association of Indian Universities). The UGC rechristened it to Bangalore University on the 10th of July 1964.





21. Allahabad University, Prayagraj (1887)

The "Allahabad University" was established on 23rd September 1887under the aegis of Sir William Muir, the Lt. Governor of the United Provinces and the building was designed by Sir William Emerson. Allahabad Unversity is known as the fourth oldest university of India after Calcutta, Bombay and Madras University.



22. Indian Veterinary Research Institute (1889)

"Indian Veterinary Research Institute" ( or IVRI) was established in 1889 and located at Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The Institute was formerly known as "Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory" however it was renamed in 1925 as "Imperial Veterinary Research Institute".




23. Hindu College, Delhi (1899)

The "Hindu College" was founded in the year of 1899 by Late Shri Krishna Dassji Gurwale. The College is located in the historic Kinari Bazar (Chandni Chowk). In 1908 the College was shifted to a building donated by Rai Bahadur Sultan Singh in Kashmiri Gate.



24. St. Columba's College, Hazaribagh (1899)

The "St. Columba's College", Hazaribag is earlier known as "Dublin University Mission College".  The college was established in 1899 by the University of Dublin, Ireland and later it got affiliation with Calcutta University.
